Good is not the same as (Julia Nowak)

When I started this assignment I looked at photos that seemed to be really good photos to me and as well suitable to the topics. Getting deeper into the topic "Good is not the same as" I tried to not think about if this is a good photo or a bad one, but to find photos that appear important, useful, interesting or liking to me, in the hope that this helps me to identify my own biases while looking at and judging photographs.

Good is not the same as Important:

Photographers: Unknown
Media Artist (Source): Ugur Gallen (@ugurgallen)

This Photography-Mix shows on the right side an important historical situation. Gallen sais that according to time magazine, it is one of the events of the 100 most important photographs that have left their mark on world history. The events name: Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse.
The specific of this picture made by Gallen is that it shows this horrible event in comparison to a normal picture of our possible last vacation trip. For me it is important because it focuses this event and raises awareness for what is happening outside of our small normal day bubble.

Good is not the same es Useful:

Photographer: Gaby Ahnert Fotografie (Bremen, Germany)

This is photo was made for my visa to enter and study in the US. It was very useful, because there were specific requirements and without it would not have been possible to sit next to you all in this class. But did you ever had a "good" passport photo?

Good is not the same as Interesting:

This picture records a moment of my first EEG-measurement during my research internship in the field of psychology. What makes this picture so interesting to me is that it tells a story in a science world. If I would not know what has happened before and after, I would ask myself: Why is the girl wearing a weird hat? What is the woman on the left doing there? What is going to be measured? What was the intention and outcome? I want to get to know more about it.

Good is not the same as Liking:

I don't have to explain why I like this picture right? Nature, sunset, a swedish fjord and a fireplace. Whenever I look at this photograph it makes me happy because it reminds me of a wonderful time.
Either good or bad photograph, I really like it.

    1. The first two are good. Here is why I think so:

The first one takes a stock image and splices it against the image of a stack of prisoners held by the US army. I remember seeing the right part of this image somewhere, but I cannot remember if it was prisoners at Guantanamo or in the Middle East. Wherever it originated, the image combines two different kinds of a "human pyramid" in a very sarcastic manner. The image contrasts visual kitcsh with political commentary. I cannot help but laugh and feel bad about having done so immediately afterwards.

The second one is good in that the thought process to select it for "useful" strikes me as thematically easy-to-understand, but it is an image that I would never have easily come up with myself.
